Slow-Release Fog Machine ─ BuzzFeed Nifty

Make an easy, low-cost, slow-drip fog dispenser that helps your dry ice last longer on the spookiest night of them all!

Here is what you'll need!

MATERIALS
1 empty wide-mouth sports drink bottle
1 regular plastic water bottle with lid
Dry ice
Food coloring dye (optional)
Hot water
Gardening gloves
Tongs

INSTRUCTIONS
With the larger wide mouth bottle, use a utility knife to cut out some vertical slits on the top part of the bottle just below the neck. Make sure the slits are open enough to allow the fog to escape - at least 1 inch tall and â…› inch wide.
With the second smaller bottle, make sure that its mouth is slightly narrower than the first. Using a thumbtack or safety pin, prick a small hole into the lid.
Fill the first bottle with dry ice chunks using tongs. Most dry ice is sold as a slab so it may be necessary to break it up into smaller chunks with a hammer or ice pick. Don’t forget to use gloves to protect your hands - never handle dry ice without protective gloves and/or tongs.
Pour hot water into this smaller bottle. Hot water makes the dry ice smoke the best, however if the water is too hot (i.e. boiling), it may melt the plastic.
Optional - you can also use a 1-2 drops of food coloring to tint the water and the fog.
Flip the bottle with the water onto the dry ice bottle. Give it a squeeze to start the fog. The slow drip will keep the fog going for a lot longer than if you were to pour straight water over a bowl of ice.
Optional: if you find the drip is not fast enough for your needs, you can prick another small hole on the bottom of the bottle with the water (which should now be facing the top). This will push the air through the bottle and force the water to come out faster. You can use masking tape to cover the bottom hole if you need to refill with more hot water.
Experiment with different sized vessels to fit your Halloween props - try with plastic takeout containers, tin cans, and soda cans!
