How To Dye Fabric With Food Scraps

SUPPLIES
Fabric (natural fibers work best: cotton, wool, linen, silk)
Bin
Water
Gentle, non-PH fabric or dish soap
Wooden spoon
Tongs
Pot (non-reactive metal such as stainless steel)
Salt
Strainer
Avocado pits
Avocado skins
Yellow onion skins
Red onion skins
Ground turmeric
Rubber gloves
Rubber bands (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS
Soak fabric in warm water with a small amount of gentle soap for 30 minutes.
Prepare food scraps. Thoroughly rinse all food bits from avocado scraps.
Fill a pot with enough water to submerge the fabric you are dyeing.
Bring food scraps to a boil. The more food scraps you add, the more concentrated the dye will be. Experiment with different amounts!
Add a dash of salt to help the dye stick to fabric.
Turn down heat and let food scraps simmer for 1 hour, or until dye bath reaches desired color.
Strain the food scraps out of the dye bath.
Wring water out of fabric. Add rubber bands for tie dye effect (optional).
Add fabric to simmering dye bath. Make sure fabric is fully submerged in dye bath. Simmer for 1 hour.
Remove from heat and let fabric soak for 24 hours.
Using gloves, wring out dye from fabric.
Store leftover dye in an airtight container. Label, date, refrigerate, and reheat for another dye bath! Dye can be reused 1-2 times, although it may be less concentrated each time.
Rinse fabric in cold water until water runs clear.
Hang to dry in a shady area (direct sunlight may cause discoloration while drying).
Wash with like colors.
