Recycled Shoebox Toys ─ BuzzFeed Nifty

Here is what you'll need!

Theater

MATERIALS
Shoebox
Parchment paper
Duct tape
Light source, like a flashlight

Optional
Construction paper
Plastic straws
Tape

INSTRUCTIONS
Cut a large rectangle out of the bottom of the shoebox.
Cover the hole with parchment paper.
Sit the shoebox sideway, with the parchment area facing the audience.
Put the light source behind the shoebox.
Make puppets out of paper. Attach each onto a straw for handling.
In a dark room, put puppets between the box and the light to create a shadow puppet show!
Alternatively, use hands to make shadow puppet.



Maze

MATERIALS
Shoebox
Plastic straws
Gluestick
Pom-poms
Hot glue
Construction paper
Old marker/pen
Button
2 magnets

INSTRUCTIONS
Cut construction paper to the size of the shoebox.
Design a maze on the paper. Make sure the maze is wide enough for the button to travel through.
Hot glue cut-up plastic straws and pom-poms to the design of the maze to create walls.
Glue the construction paper to the bottom of the shoebox.
Hot glue a magnet to the flat side of the button.
Hot glue a magnet to one end of the marker. Make sure the magnet is turned so it attracts the magnet on the button.
Place the button in the maze. It’s the mouse!
Hold the marker under the shoebox to move the mouse around.



Guitar

MATERIALS
Shoebox
Paper towel tube
Decorative tape
4 rubber bands

Optional, for decorating
Cardboard
Paper
Markers

INSTRUCTIONS
Cut a circle with about 6 inches in diameter on the top lid of the shoebox.
Cut a circle the diameter of the paper towel tube on the the smallest side of the shoebox.
Insert the paper towel tube in the small hole and tape down.
Using the scrap cardboard from the cut out, cut a small rectangle about 5 by 3 inches.
Fold each longer side inward to create a triangle shaped tube.
Wrap tape around the tube to secure it in shape. You may want to use a decorative tape such as washi tape.
Repeat step 4-5 to create another tube.
Place these tubes on either side of the circle so it looks like the bridge of the guitar.
Secure the tubes down to the lid with 4 rubber bands. These are the strings.
Add any decoration you want and strum away!



Foosball Table

MATERIALS
Shoebox
Green paper
Gluestick
6 dowels
12 clothespins
Ping pong ball

Optional, for decorating
Cardboard
Paper
Markers

INSTRUCTIONS
Cut one hole on each of the smallest side of the shoebox. Make sure it is big enough for the ball to travel through.
Cover the bottom of the shoebox with green paper (looks like grass!).
Mark 6 holes on the wide side of the shoebox for the dowels. Make sure that the dowels are spaced out evenly, and high enough for the clothespins to move and rotate but still low enough to touch the ball.
Cut small “x” on each hole.
Insert the dowels in the holes and through to the other side of the box.
Paint 6 clothespins to differentiate the team.
Attach clothespins to the dowels in this order:
Team A Goalie
2 Team B Players
3 Team A Players
3 Team B Players
2 Team A Players
Team B Goalie
Optional: Add any other decoration such as scoreboards.
